Bright purple without being too saturated. Very young and fresh fruit. Exceptionally backward and classically noble. Precision, purity, evidently plenty of new oak but that is totally irrelevant here. Disciplined and will become spectacular. Louis-Michel Liger-Belair’s 2018 la Romanée is clearly the stand out wine of this tasting. Drink from 2038. ***** Tasted: September 2022
This too is very reserved and only grudgingly reveals its gorgeously pure, elegant and wafting nose which speaks of violet, lavender, Asian-style tea, sandalwood and softly spiced dark currant, plum and black raspberry scents. The silky but intense and exquisitely delineated medium weight flavors possess flat out superb depth on the impressively persistent finish. As it always is at this early stage, the '18 La Romanée is compact yet marvelously classy. Patience strongly advised, indeed I wouldn't even think of opening a bottle before its 15th birthday as it's clearly going to require extended cellaring if you wish to enjoy it at its peak. One of the wines of the 2018 vintage. (Drink starting 2043)
