Tasting Notes

A concentrated red made up of a blend of 43% touriga franca, 40% touriga nacional, 7% tinta cao, 5% tinta roriz and 5% sousao. This has ripe aromas of prunes and spices with violets and liquorice. Medium- to full-bodied and very intense with plenty of dark-fruit flavours. Aged in 50% new oak.

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, October 2024

The red 2021 Quinta da Leda was produced with a blend of 45% Touriga Francesa, 40% Touriga Nacional, 7% Tinto Cão (for its freshness) and 5% Sousão from the vineyards on their large property, some co-fermented depending on the quantities, and it matured in French oak barrels, 50% of them new for 18 months, including malolactic. It's quite toasty and smoky, still very young and in need of patience. It has structure and tannin, and it's a wine that needs time and/or powerful food. It has contained ripeness, 13.5% alcohol and mellow acidity. 67,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2023 and released in September 2025.

Full bottle 1,503 g. A blend of Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão and Sousão from the 170-ha Quinta da Leda estate in the far eastern reaches of the Douro Superior, just 12 km from the border with Spain. Hand-harvested grapes, fully destemmed, co-fermented in stainless-steel tanks. Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, around 50% of which were new. TA 5.7 g/l, pH 3.6.

Dark purplish crimson with purple rim. Intense aroma of every kind of black and blue fruit, becoming sweetly spicy, open and generous but still with the rocky savour of the Douro Superior. This last shows even more on the palate. Smooth, chocolatey, caressing tannins but also nicely dry and fresh on the finish. Deep and long and surprisingly approachable but should age well as the oak recedes. It's deceptively approachable now but will reward those who can wait a little longer. 2025-2035

I have gone on record stating that this wine is the finest value fifty quid red on earth and following on from the rich, layered 2020; this 2021 is a more finely tuned and infinitely detailed creation. In place of bombast and impact, you will discover a wondrous, mosaic-like flavour of blue, black and red fruit notes, succulent oak and savoury minerality. After half an hour in a decanter, this wine sings, and if you like top-flight red Bordeaux, it casts the same silhouette on the palate with just that little bit more exoticism and spice!
