A wine that needs no introduction to lovers of Verget White Burgundy. This is made from a part of the "Sur La Roche" vineyard that faces north, so it is only entitled to the Macon appellation, rather than the section facing south which is classed as Pouilly Fuissé Premier Cru. The production was only 400 cases in 2024 and it was elevaged all in oak with 25% new. We buy all we can of this wine every year, but it is never enough. Pale lemon in colour. The nose is explosive yet beautifully delineated here, showing wood spice, tangy lemon peel, white plum and yuzu. The palate has real tang and salinity, the interplay of wood and fruit beautifully balanced and equally powerful. Despite the ripeness and spice, a spine of acidity keeps everything fresh. The texture is fantastic, with a leesy, creamy breadth, chalky phenolic grip and generous fruit set against that acid bite. The finish, too, is long with superb balance. This is an outstanding iteration of this ever-reliable cuvée.
Julian Desplans (wine maker and right-hand man of Jean-Marie Guffens) says that the 2024 Verget wines have both minerality and power. Picked from September 10th to 28th. They are reminiscent of the 2010 and 2014 vintages.
