Tasting Notes

The 2024 Chenin Blanc Iron comes from the Rondomskrik Vineyard, which actually means "scared from all around," referring to the fact that winds come from all directions. This has a slightly more introverted bouquet that needs a little more coaxing, slightly more earthy, with a hint of wet clay/potters' wheel in the background. The palate is very well balanced with a saline entry, very focused, with a little more mineralité and tension compared to the Granite. Superb. Drink 2027-2046

Iron comes from a dry-farmed vineyard to the north of Malmesbury, where there is a degree of influence from the Atlantic Ocean. Picked first in a temperate site, it has some subtle gunflint reduction, quince and pink grapefruit flavours, pithy acidity and a salty tang. Very classy indeed.

The Iron Chenin Blanc sits in contrast to the Granite, much more aromatic and open at this stage. The puppy fat of the nose comes in waves of membrillo and tarte tatin, it is lush and intense, yet has a spice box and apple blossom top note. The palate is intense, almost glossy but not sweet, with a full-bodied mouthfeel that is cut through with mouthwatering acidity. A plush, juicy and impressive wine, it feels very distinctive and again full of potential, yet it feels more open and ready than the Granite at this stage.
