Tasting Notes

**Note: from several parcels totaling 1.5 ha that are roughly divided between .90 ha of terres rouges and .60 ha of terres blanches, the latter of which has the slightly older vines**
A markedly floral nose exhibits plenty of spice and earth elements that add breadth to the purple fruit-infused nose. There is excellent size, weight and power to the big-bodied, intense and concentrated flavors that possess copious amounts of dry extract that imparts a seductive texture and buffers the very firm tannic spine on the hugely long finish. This too is an overtly robust yet impeccably well-balanced wine that should also age for years; indeed it will absolutely require it.

Bright, dark red. Darker but less expressive on the nose than the Amoureuses, offering pungent, soil-inflected scents of red peony, pink peppercorn, brown spices and medicinal menthol. Fat and sweet on entry, then quite backward in the mid-palate, showing less detail than the Amoureuses but desperately in need of oxygen--or long bottle aging. With its serious chocolatey tannins, intense spiciness and suggestion of dried berries, this very ripe wine is more brown than white soil in personality. Lay it down. 2026 - 2042

Roumier's 2012 Bonnes-Mares blossoms in all directions with stunning purity, depth and transparency. A pure, magnificent expression of this great site, the 2012 is simply magnetic in its spherical, multi-dimensional personality. The flavors are dark, spiced and intensely mineral, but that doesn't do full justice to what is in the glass. An intensely saline, bracing finish rounds things out in total style. I expect the 2012 to drink well for many, many years. Recent bottles of the 1988 and 1990 are poignant reminders of just how far these wines have come over the last 25 years. In 2012, yields were so small, that all of the fruit from both the terres blanches and terres rouges sections of the vineyard were vinified together.
