Tasting Notes

The 2015 Meyney is an outstanding Saint Estèphe and here confirms its shock victory in the blind Southwold tasting. Intense dark cherries, blackberry and sage on the nose reveal just a hint of iron filings, all very cohesive and demonstrating well-integrated oak. The medium-bodied palate offers fine-grained tannins, good grip and plush red fruit laced with white pepper and sage, leading to a more structured finish than the impressive 2014. Superb. Tasted at a vertical at Château Meyney. 2022 - 2045

Tasted blind. Very dark crimson. Rich array of aromas on the nose. Ambitious with lots of stuff covering a pretty massive charge of tannins. Just slightly inky. Exciting finish. Very persistent. Classic build with lots of ambition. Everyone thought this was Montrose! VGV Drink 2025-2045

Tasted blind at the 2015 Southwold group tasting. A deep ruby purple in the glass, this exudes ripe blackcurrant, liquorice and toasted spices on the nose. The palate is dense and tightly wound, with intense cassis, nutmeg and toast in harmony with a bold, chewy tannic structure. This muscular style is not overpowering due to the depth and concentration of fruit. Though ripe, there are waves of freshness from the tannin and acidity in the wine. A long, savoury finish suggests a very good future ahead.

Impressive dark-cherry and dark-plum aromas with nicely delivered spices and chocolate to boot. The palate has a very vibrant, very juicy and fresh pure palate with dark cherry flavors that hold bright. Very approachable St.-Estephe. Try from 2020.

A red-fruited and relatively seductive wine, this has good balance with decent detail and some rather nice freshness
about it. Forward and appealing, the oak is quite firm but it doesn’t get in the way.

The 2015 Meyney was the shock of this blind tasting - in a positive sense. It blew everyone's expectations including mine. It has very impressive intensity on the nose, more than its peers, with blackberry, raspberry, sage and just a touch of dried blood. This is quite complex and very engaging. The palate is very well defined with fine acidity, razor-sharp tannin and plenty of mineralité toward the persistent finish. I thought it might be Montrose but it turned out to be Meyney. Chapeau! Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.

The 2015 Meyney is a blend of 52% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Petit Verdot. The aromatics are nicely composed, quite pure with well-integrated new oak (40%). There is something almost Burgundian here with Morello cherries, crushed strawberry and light rose petal aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannin. It has modest depth, prioritizing balance and finesse over power, adorned with a caressing finish that renders this one of the most approachable Saint-Estèphes this vintage. Drink this finely crafted Meyney over the next decade. Anticipated maturity: 2020 - 2030.

The 2015 Meyney has a rounded red cherry and blackcurrant scented bouquet with a touch of spice that only develops with rigorous aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. I appreciate the fleshiness of this Saint Estèphe and it is nicely balanced. I can envisage this being an enjoyable 2015 to drink over the next decade, even if I suspect they will create better vintages in the future. Drink 2019-2029

An outstanding red with blackberry and chocolate character. Full to medium body, silky tannins and a fresh finsih. Very well done for the vintage considering less than perfect conditions in St. Estephe

Very dark crimson. Smells just very slightly tired although the sample was taken yesterday. Minty nose. Thick and sweet with slightly heavy oak imprint.

This Saint Estephe Chateau makes wines that are true to the appellation with impressive depth and concentration. Always modestly priced en primeur. The 51 hectare vineyard is planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. Deep ruby colour. Very smoky on the nose with pencil shavings and cassis. The palate offsets floral violets with smoky tar and spicy clove. There is impressive concentration and intensity with firm tannins. Impressively done.
