Tasting Notes

Such a beautiful and complex nose of rose petals, dark fruit and sandalwood. Full-bodied, juicy and flavorful. A precise linear edge to this runs through the wine. Very fine tannins. Yet this is so powerful. Love it. Drink in 2022 and forward.

Medium to deep garnet in color, the 2015 Quintus needs a little swirling to uncover evocative notes of baked black plums, juicy black cherries, and licorice, plus hints of tar, Chinese five spice, and fragrant earth. Full-bodied, the palate is opulent and plush, with velvety tannins supporting the generous fruit, leading to a burst of freshness on the finish.

Tasted blind. Light, well-mannered nose. Neat, fresh, polished fruit, though hardly a rowdy attention-grabber. Slightly sandpapery tannins on the end. 15%

The top cuvee is the 2015 Château Quintus, and it’s a sensationally concentrated, textured beauty loaded with character. Toasty oak, chocolate, blackcurrants, and licorice all emerge from this full-bodied Saint-Emilion and it has a terrific mid-palate, fine tannin and the balance and depth to keep for two decades. 2018 - 2038

Fresh fruit the nose floral and fragrant the start of the palate is bright with red fruits. Depth in the middle the fruit is ripe mid fleshiness suppleness dark chocolate under the fruit adds to the richness. Yet there is balance brighter at the back fragrant spicy with length of fruit on the finish. 2020-32

Owned by Haut-Brion since 2011, this property is getting better with every vintage. This is a
bold, ripe wine, but it’s not over-extracted or figgy. Savoury oak, sweet red fruits, fine tannins
and (most important of all) refreshing acidity combine attractively here. Drink: 2022-30

This is a succulent, Merlot-rich, focussed and concentrated wine but, curiously, the fruit seems jolly, pretty and conversational
when I expected it to be harder and more introverted. This is because of the lower percentage of new oak used
here, which allows the Merlot to express itself. The result is a sensual style which still has grip and tension, but which can
also be drunk relatively young. This is clever and thoughtful winemaking which should attract all-comers.

The 2015 Château Quintus is a blend of 76% Merlot and 24% Cabernet Franc picked between 23 September and 9 October, matured in 37% new wood. It has an intense, lifted bouquet of violet-infused blueberry and blackberry fruit, very floral and vivacious. The palate is very well balanced with ripe, supple tannin that carry the pure black cherry and boysenberry fruit effortlessly. The acidity is very well judged and there is great precision towards the finish that leaves a residue of white pepper on the tongue. This is one of the most harmonious and complex Quintus that I have tasted since its debut in 2011, though it deserves 4-6 years in bottle to subsume those tannins. Drink 2022-2045

Crazy aromas of saffron, volcanic salt, hot stone, mushrooms, and wet earth. Then blueberry and blackberry undertones. Full body, super compressed and refined tannins. Powerful. Seamless and endless. 76% merlot and the rest cabernet franc.

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, March 2016

A blend of 76% Merlot and 24% Cabernet Franc, the 2015 Quintus has a medium to deep garnet-purple hue, opening with aromas of baked cherries, warm red currants and crushed black plums with touches of cigar box, violets and dark chocolate. Medium-bodied, it sports very finely-grained, plush tannins and remains seamlessly refreshing and elegant in the mouth with a seductively nuanced flavor profile, culminating with wonderful length and depth. 2020 - 2038

Dark and rich on the nose. Big and bold. A bit more chunky and structured than the Dragon, the second wine named after the 6m-high dragon on the property. Not as charming as the second wine at this stage.
