Tasting Notes

Breathtaking aromas of perfectly ripe fruit with blackberries, black olives, licorice, cedar and sweet tobacco. Full body, incredible depth and power, yet this is always in reserve and check. Everything is in the right place for this new legend from Trotanoy. Try it in 2026. Will age for decades in the future.

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, February 2018

The 2015 Trotanoy has generous black cherry, blackberry, briary and white pepper aromas on the nose that seem to envelop the senses. There is just a hint of autumn bonfire in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, fresh and nicely poised. A dash of spice toward the peppery finish, hints of Chinese five-spice on the aftertaste. This is a serious and quite compelling Trotanoy for long-term aging, but hey, what's new? Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.

Neal Martin, vinous.com, July 2019

The 2015 Trotanoy is medium to deep garnet colored. It sings with gorgeous scents of black cherry preserves, blackberry pie, and juicy blueberries, plus wafts of tobacco leaf, licorice, and mossy tree bark with a waft of crushed rocks. Full, super-concentrated, and built like a brick house, it has rich, concentrated black fruit and earthy layers, finishing with epic length.

Tasted blind. Dark and lustrous. Sweet and round. Lots of vivacity and really together and gorgeous with great intensity. Very long but slightly drying on the end.

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, February 2019

Trotanoy is one of the top names of the Pomerol appellation and is has been made by the Jean-Pierre Moueix company since the 1950's. The 7.2 hectare vineyard is planted with 93% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc. Very limited quantities available. Deep purple in the glass. The nose is powerful with oodles of black fruit, vanilla, unctuous cherry and lots of smoke and spice. The Palate is concentrated and intense with both black and red fruits with lots of very fine, silky, supple tannins that give a rich and rounded texture to carry all the sweet fruit and hints of milk chocolate. This is juicy and approachable but also complex. This will be a great crowd pleaser but is also very fine with the potential for ageing.

Farr Vintners, March 2016

Managed by the talented Moueix team, the 2015 Château Trotanoy is a ripe, hedonistic, heady beauty that boasts awesome notes of ripe cherry fruit, toasted spices, fruit cake, and forest floor, with more floral and incense nuances coming through with time in the glass. A blend of 93% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc, this full-bodied, sexy, exotic, and beautifully textured 2015 has sweet tannin, moderate acidity, and a great finish. It needs 4-5 years of bottle age to round into form but will impressive for 20+ years. 2022 - 2042

The fruit on the nose is rich and ripe the palate fleshy and supple. Ripe black plum on the mid palate is backed by fresher bramble slightly lighter at the back but there is sweetness and depth on the finish. 2025-40

The aroma of this wine is so enticing that you want to dab some behind your ears. Floral,
leafy and very pure, with deftly interwoven oak, succulent tannins, balancing acidity and lots
of dark plum and bramble fruit. Fresh, yet extremely well structured. Drink: 2025-40

Tim Atkin MW, timatkin.com, April 2016

Trotanoy is powerful and omnipotent in 2015 with considerable structure and a very dry, long, domineering finish. The
grip of tension on the finish is incredible and it heightens the briary, exotic notes which cavort on the surface of this
doom-laded potion. Trotanoy is angry and it wants everyone to know. When you drink this wine, in two or three decade’s
time, it will have reconciled its issues with world and will presumably present itself as a mild-mannered Titan, but for
the time being it is raucously tannic and immensely impressive.

The depth of fruit and length to this is spectacular with blackberry, wet earth, dark bitter chocolate and blueberry character. It’s full and powerful and absolutely seamless. Perhaps the greatest wine ever made here. 93% merlot and 7% cabernet franc.

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, March 2016

Composed of 93% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc, the 2015 Trotanoy reveals a medium to deep garnet-purple color and comes prancing out of the glass with the most striking black fruit preserves, plum pudding, red currant jelly and blueberry compote notions, followed up by nuances of rose petals, chocolate box, licorice and menthol plus a waft of wild mushrooms. Full-bodied, rich and decadent, it fills the palate with generous perfumed black and blue fruit layers with a seductive frame of velvety tannins and seamless freshness, finishing very long and very minerally. 2023 - 2053

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate (Interim Fe), February 2018

The 2015 Trotanoy has an intense bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, still with a little new oak to be subsumed but there is wonderful delineation here with hints of bay leaf and smoke emerging with time. The palate is grippy on the entry. This is a Pomerol with great backbone and structure and yet there is also wondrous delineation and complexity, a crescendo of flavor with black truffle and allspice emerging toward the persistent finish. Outstanding. Anticipated maturity: 2023 - 2055.

Neal Martin, March 2018

The 2015 Trotanoy is a blend of 93% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc. It has a fragrant bouquet, unusually understated and introverted for Trotanoy, with tightly wound, gravel-scented black fruit, touches of dried orange peel and truffle in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, tensile tannin. Again, this feels compact, dense, a coiled spring perhaps, but there is plenty of energy here. Perhaps in the long-term, the Hosanna and the La Fleur Petrus might be the picks from JP Moueix in this great Pomerol vintage, but Trotanoy always springs a surprise once in bottle. Trotanoy - an enigma eternal, but we would not want it any other way. Drink 2022-2045.

Notably dark crimson. Very savoury, with marked acidity and freshness. Yet it is more concentrated than any other J-P Moueix wine. A slow burner but should be exciting eventually.
