This is now just starting to display some secondary development with really lovely complexity on the earthy and ripe dark berry fruit and dried floral/spice aromas. There is a beguiling sweetness to the round, intense and still somewhat muscular flavors that display a discreet minerality on the wonderfully long, mouth coating and enveloping finale. This is a wine of harmony and balance and thanks to the underlying reserve of material should be capable of living for years. I should note that some bottles seem a bit more developed than others and while it could be drunk now with pleasure I would advise holding for a bit longer. Tasted several times with consistent results with respect to quality though not necessarily in terms of bottle evolution. Try from 2022+
Superb scents of spicy candied cherries, perfume, roses, blueberries, and mint can be discerned in the aromatic profile of the sensual 2002 Bonnes Mares. A wine of magnificent breadth, power, focus, and purity of flavors, it gracefully dances across the palate releasing a myriad of super-ripe red fruits. Exceptionally well-balanced, its satin-textured, seamless personality lingers for 40 seconds in the finish, exhibiting additional waves of sweet red cherries. This tour de force should be drunk between 2007 and 2017.
The nose hasn't budged an inch since my original review in-bottle review and rests entirely in the red fruit spectrum and rather than spice, there is an intense floral and violet quality followed by detailed, ultra pure and tautly muscular flavors that deliver real punch and a lovely minerality on the incredibly long backend. A complete and seamless wine of enormous complexity and considerable underlying reserve plus enough structure for at least three plus decades of life. A great effort that is even better than I originally thought it could be from cask and because it appears to be evolving at a snail's pace, I have extended my initial suggested drinking window accordingly.
