This classically-styled claret did not merit an outstanding rating because it lacks sufficient concentration to compete with the estate’s top vintages. However, it offers a dark ruby/plum color, nicely evolved notes of roasted herbs, sweet cherries and currants, and loamy earth, medium-weight, light to moderate tannin, and an elegant style. If it puts on weight over the next few years, it may deserve a slightly higher score. Anticipated maturity: now-2018.
I drank this at Pastis resto in New York City just before my Brunello event on May 18. Love the Paris Bistro vibe. Lovely soft tannins with coffee and cedar with ripe fruit. China tea. Subtle. Cloves too. Full and round with beautiful fruit and a crisp finish. Very ready. At its peak.
Deep purple. Very concentrated and yet fragrant too (this is usually contradictory). Lively, well balanced, very fine tannins, silky textured. Good balance with lots of fruit on the front palate. Quite integrated with minerality like Latour. Mid weight (lighter than Latour). Confident and vivacious without a hint of tartiness
A really beautiful wine. This could be one of the great buys of 2004, depending on price. The thread of raspberry perfume that runs through seems inexhaustible, from first sniff to last echo. Dense, bright, raspberry fruit and plenty of cedary oak greet you, then a rich and concentrated mid-palate with a fair amount of vanilla oak, fresh, slightly green acidity and a well-structured tannic backbone. True vin de garde. 2012-2030
This dark purple-tinged 2004 is presently revealing abundant amounts of spicy new oak, but based on previous vintages, that component should be quickly absorbed (the percentage of new oak utilized has not changed). A deep ruby/purple color is followed by aromas of black cherries, currants, and pain grille, medium body, and a soft finish. This elegant, classic wine would benefit from additional concentration. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2018.
This 2004 comes across like their 1988. An unusually high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) was blended with 30% Merlot, resulting in a dense ruby/purple-colored, slightly herbaceous Calon-Segur possessing a tapenade/olive characteristic along with plump, rich black cherries, truffles, underbrush, and black currants. Medium to full-bodied with plenty of sweet tannin, excellent purity, and a broad mouthfeel. It will require 3-4 years of cellaring, and should keep for two decades.
A solid wine for the vintage with lots of Cabernet character, from tobacco to currants. Full-bodied, with good tannins and a long finish. Well done. Reminds me of the 1996. The owner said that they had about 20 percent Merlot in the blend, less than normal
