Tasting Notes

Blended with 5% Viognier and coming from a mix of lieux-dits spread throughout the appellation, the 2022 Côte Rôtie La Giroflarie has a beautiful perfume of red, blue, and black fruits as well as pepper, violets, spring flowers, and a kiss of bacon fat. Rich, concentrated, medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannins and just about flawless balance, this elegant, seamless, lengthy Côte Rôtie will drink beautifully for two decades. Give it a few years if you can. Drink 2029-2045. 2029 - 2045

(a good example from several casks) full red colour; blackberry, stewed fruits, raspberry feature in a rather thick bouquet, though there is also a discreet and interesting perfume, violet. The palate is also well filled, has a firm generosity, with compact richness and gras on the agenda, comes with iron threads on the attack, has direction, is pretty sturdy inside, close-knit, iron again on the aftertaste. It connects to its terroir, is a genuine small domaine Rôtie with good length and a hand made feel. 37 hl/ha. Unusually, there is 35% new oak this year because Patrick bought a few new casks, 25% is normal. From 2028. 2051-53 Feb 2023 ****(*)

A real success at this address, reflecting the stylistic refinement seen in recent vintages, the 2022 Cote Rotie la Giroflarie exudes a complex, fresh bouquet of pepper, dark berries, spices, licorice, pencil lead and floral notes. Medium to full-bodied, layered and textured, it has a delicate, pure core of fruit, with a tense, linear mid-palate of fine-grained tannins and bright acids that carry through the long, ethereal and saline finish. Crafted from a blend of 95% Syrah and 5% Viognier—all destemmed—that was sourced from vines spread across 14 plots in 14 lieux-dits, this terrific contribution to the vintage was matured for 24 months in a combination of barrels (30% new) and wooden tanks. It is a stunning wine in the making that captures the essence of Côte Rôtie. 2024 - 2044
