England

The commercial production of sparkling wine in England started in the 1960s. However, the industry has undergone a renaissance in recent years and English Sparkling Wine is now a serious alternative to Champagne thanks to our favourable climate and soil types.

Today, there are hundreds of vineyards in Southern England producing sparkling wines, with significant investment now also coming from Champagne houses that see the potential. Nyetimber is one of the largest and best producers in England, making fine and ageworthy whites and rosés that measure up to some of the most famous names in Champagne. Like most traditional method sparkling wine, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are now the two most commonly planted grape varieties in English vineyards.
