Farr Vintners have spent years looking for red Burgundy that offers the quality, personality and affordability that we believe in strongly enough to import. It's not easy: prices in the Cote d'Or have soared in the last decade, making the search for great value Pinot Noir ever more challenging. Finally, we have found a set of wines that offer the quality we have been looking for at an excellent price point: Domaine Jessiaume.
Jessiaume are based in the village of Santenay, a village that has historically kept a relatively low profile, although the domaine has a rich history of producing fine wines dating back to 1850. After a number of changes in ownership, the wines had become a little inconsistent and it is really thanks to young winemaker William Waterkeyn who joined the domaine in 2014 that the wines are on such fine form today.
Overseeing major investment in the vineyards and winery including a move to organic farming and a much lighter touch in the cellar, it seems Waterkyn has quite the gift for producing wines of great purity, clarity of fruit and character in spades. His talent has not gone unnoticed. In 2020, he was voted Burgundy’s Young Talent of the Year whilst in 2021, the Wine Advocate’s William Kelley wrote how the wines offered “plenty of promise” and that “I'm sure this estate will one day regain the fine reputation it enjoyed in the 19th and early 20th centuries.” Having tasted the wines as a team on more than one occasion, we are firmly convinced that this estate has indeed redeemed itself and is on quite the roll.
Jessiaume's wines are ones of poise, persistence and downright drinkability - you don't have to wait a decade to enjoy these fabulous wines. Nor do you have to worry about the price. All are brilliant wines at their price point and highly recommended by all of us at Farr.
