Tasting Notes

Palish medium red with little or no amber at the rim. Wilder on the nose than the 2002, with aromas of raspberry, cedar and fresh blood complicated by leather and game nuances. Offers a superb combination of intensity and weight, with its fruit and saline mineral flavors energized by surprisingly fresh acidity and firming minerality. This densely packed midweight is still a bit youthfully imploded, finishing with a tannic firmness. Perhaps most impressive today for its slow-building, rising length, this soil-inflected wine does not narrow on the back half. Drink 2020-2039.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (135), June 2001

The medium to dark ruby-colored 1999 Corton-Pougets (domaine) has a magnificent nose of intensely sweet cherries. Medium-bodied and dense, it is crammed with blackberries, cassis, cherries, and firm yet ripe tannin. This wine will require cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2012+.

Pierre-Antoine Rovani, Wine Advocate (135), June 2001

The 1999 Corton “Pougets” from Maison Jadot is still a young wine, but is starting to stir nicely and is now showing lovely transparency and red fruity complexity, to go along with still a fair bit of reserve. The already complex bouquet wafts from the glass in a lovely blend of cherries, red currants, orange peel, Corton spices, a lovely base of soil, smoked meats, bonfire and cedary oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and soil-driven, with a lovely core of fruit, still a firm chassis of ripe tannin, tangy acids and excellent focus and grip on the long and beautifully balanced finish. All this excellent wine needs is further bottle age. 2028-2100.
